Hello all,

I am very excited to announce Tactile Entertainment's first release to the AppStore. While everyone has been hard at work with Pocket Creatures, I have been covertly developing Crazy Test, which we are now ready to reveal.

We simply needed a way to get some of the crazy ideas out of our heads and keep Morten "MacDaddy" from putting them into Pocket Creatures. Thus came to be "Crazy Test" a wacky Wario Ware inspired marathon of mini games for the iPhone and iPod touch.

We hope you will enjoy this game as much as we enjoyed creating it.

just wanted to give you guys an update on our beta progress. We are currently working really hard to finish the first beta build and we are accepting applications for the beta now.

What we need from you guys:

We need you to be willing to invest time in testing the game for us, both to find bugs, but also to help us fine tune the game for our first release that includes balancing and polishing up the final features. Lastly if you will get access to the feature list we are currently working from, and give feedback on what is planned for the first updates.

Home from GDC

After a week with sunny weather and only a bit of rain were back home in freezing cold Denmark. Monday work began with the finishing touches on the beta build of Pocket Creatures which we hope to start testing on very soon. By the way, we are also hard at work on tweaking the game to be running as beautiful on the iPad as possible :)

iCreatures on iPad :-)

Obviously we have been really excited in the office ever since we heard about Apples iPad the first time.

One of the reason for this is that it has actually one of the things we originally discussed when we first started to develop our engine technology about one year ago. We wanted to build the game engine for the next iteration of the hardware. Off course at that time we didn't know it would be called an iPad. The thing we new was that Apple would most likely introduced a higher resolution screen, and a lot processing power.

Luckily our bet turned out to be true, and we therefore will able to easily adapt iCreatures to the iPad. We have not decided on when the iPad version will launch yet - since we don't have the hardware to test on. But one thing we will promise is that we will develop Pocket Creatures for both iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone.

We have just implemented that the creature can become sleepy over time and eventually fall asleep. But we haven't designed a bed for the poor creature yet and we were thinking if some of you guys have any idea for what the creature's bed should look like?

Behavioral System

We are throwing a crazy idea back and forth in the office, and we would like your feedback on it:

Imagine that you as the player, could affect the creature’s relations to game objects. You could make the creature hate bananas, love the woodpecker and fear the coconut.

The creature’s relation towards an object or critter is determined by association with the player’s actions while the creature is interacting with the object or critter. For example if the player slaps the creature while it is eating a melon, the creature will begin to fear melons. See the comic strip below:

The creature is eating a melon and all is good in the world

But alas, the evil player decides to slap the poor creature while it is enjoying its melon

From now on the creature will associate melon with the painful slap and try to avoid melons at all costs

The Creature's Tail

As some of you probably have noticed, the creature’s tail is a bit strange. The hand at the end of the tail is essential to interacting with the creature. The creature uses the hand at the end of the tail to grab and hold items. The player can also drag the ”tail hand” and use it as a slingshot. The player lifts and drags an object and holds it over the creature’s tail hand. The creature will then grab the object. Now the player can throw use the tail to shoot specific targets – for example unsuspecting critters.

The player and the creature working together to shoot the Woodpecker with a coconut :)

Special achievements will be added for hitting various critters and items.

During the conception of Pocket Creatures we felt that our creature were a bit alone on the island so we decided to give him some company. His new friends are the so called "critters". Critters are very dumb animals which the player and the creature can exploit to their own devious ends. The idea behind critters is to let them serve as tools for the player and the creature. So far we have come up with two critters; the sleepy "Anteater" that works as a vacuum cleaner and the hyperactive "Woodpecker" that can be used to break stuff, sting the creature, and in general make a lot of noise.

Charater Design

The conceptual development of the "Pocket Creatures" is an ongoing process and we have had many heated discussions about what Pocket Creatures should look and act like. Here are some of early concepts we have discussed:

As you can see we had lengthy discussion of whatever he should have pockets or not.

Choosing a specific creature design has great impact on what kind of game we will end up with. As evident from the picture above we initially didn't have a clue as to where the game should take place or what kind of activities the player could do with the creature. We only knew that the creature should be playful and curious about everything. However, discussing the above concepts we agreed on one thing; we liked the idea of a special tail that the creature could use to grab things with and interact with the world. Furthermore this tail could also be significant in the interaction with the player

The personality of the creature has also been debated back and forth. Some personality concept can be seen in the picture below:

Studying the above concepts gave us an idea; our creature's temper and mood should not be predetermined. Having a creature that is always cute weren't very appealing to us. So we decided to let the creatures personality be somewhat erratic, but still context sensitive - so the player would have even more to experiment with in the game. Thus the Pocket Creature should be able to be happy one moment but exploding in a fit of rage the next - if pushed too far.

Interacting with your creature

I would like to show you some interaction concepts for Pocket Creatures I'm currently working on. All interaction in the game works via the iPhone/iPods touch screen interface. Player touch and finger movement is translated to in-game actions. The two basic controls are: Touch/Tap and Drag

The controls are context sensitive, meaning that the same finger movement can be translated into different actions depending on what in-game objects the player interacts with. For example will a back and forth “dragging” motion on the creature be translated into “petting”, but the same motion will be translated into “shaking” when the player has her finger on top of the tree. In the picture below are some examples of different player actions all executed by Touch and Dragging.

Project update!

We are on our way to meeting our first milestone where the basic interaction with the creature will have to be done. Currently we are working on animations and interaction code and trying to get it all to make sense :)

Here is what we are working on at the moment:

This is a picture of our artist, Anders’s workstation. Right now he is tweaking the face texture of the creature. The creature has somehow acquired a strange manic look. I really don’t want to know what it has been doing to get that excited, perhaps it has something to do with the pills next to the monitor…

Here is Kristian our programmer doing some boring coding work. I really don’t know why we need all this code but he keeps telling me it is important.

Here is the most special person in the company (me), practicing his “Vulcan eyebrow trick”. Besides imitating Spock in this picture, I am working on an animations list as part of the design documentation.

Here’s Asbjoern – the manager. He is supposed to lead this production but he is just sitting and coding most of the day. I don’t know why, but he seems to find his own code very amusing.

Tactile is working with Secret Exit

We are happy to tell you that Tactile has joined forces with Secret Exit the developers of Zen Bound and Spin for the iPhone.

We are working together on a shared engine that will enable us as smaller indie developers to continue the development of a top notch iPhone engine.

The whole "deal" came together after talking to my friend from the Crytek days, Lead AI programmer on Crysis Mikko Mononen. Mikko who has been working at Secret Exit for a while on Zen Bound, hooked me up with Jani from Secret Exit and we decided to start sharing code.

We are really excited about this because it will enable us deliver higher quality games in less time.

Pocket Creatures

Pocket Creatures is a sandbox type of game where you play/fight/explore with your friend - the creature. There is still a lot of undecided factors and features regarding the concept and gameplay and we would like to develop the concept further through community feedback. So please tell us what you think of the interaction and graphics examples below:

We have been working on a new iPod/iPhone game concept iCreatures (working title) for a few months now. Last week it was officially annnounced that we have received grants to complete our first iCreature prototype from New Danish Screen (link in Danish) and from the Nordic Game Program.

This means that we are well on our way to making our first game on the iPhone OS.
